As a result of the congestion between Kurunegala and the Maho section in the Northern railway line, a delay of over one hour of office trains in the mornings and evenings is a very common occurrence.
As such, the proposal made by the Minister of Transport Services Management, to construct an additional track of 43KM in length with an upgrading signalling system in addition to the existing line between Kurunegala and Maho utilizing the balance money remaining from the Indian Credit Line with a view to reducing the travel time of the Northbound passenger trains and accrue the full benefit of the reconstruction of the Northern railway lines and to obtain the services of the Central Engineering Construction Bureau for the related consultancy services, was approved by the Cabinet.
