The Government Has Informed JICA that LRT Project Will Not Proceed

The Cabinet Spokesperson Minister Bandula Gunawardena stated that the government has informed JICA that the Government will not proceed the Colombo Light Rail Transit project. (18)

The minister clearly stated that the project was not halted by Japan but the government of Sri Lanka.

Co-spokesperson Minister Ramesh Pathirana added that many existing buildings will be affected as a result of the LRT project.

However, Minister Gunewardena claims that the project would be awarded to a Chinese company at a 6% interest rate compared to a lower rate by Japan may be made by those who would stand to benefit from the light rail project.
