Kelani Valley Railway Line Archeological Surveys

Kelani Valley Railway Line Archeological Surveys

Archeological surveys were conducted along the Kelani Valley Railway Line on 29th July, and 8th & 15th of August, 2019 to identify the archaeologically valuable sites and collect information.

The surveys were carried out by the Officials of the Department of Archeology (in the Western Province) and the Safeguard team of Colombo Suburban Railway project (CSRP). By looking for structures and noting the surrounding geology, the team observed that there are a significant number of more than century-old hydrological impact mitigation remains belonging to the 1900 – 1902 era along the railway line. Most of the structures and culverts discovered still stand strong; as such where ever possible these sites are worthy of protection.
