Maradana Railway Station

Maradana Railway Station (Station Code: MDA) is one of Colombo's most strategically positioned urban rail junctions, located just 2.1 km east of Colombo Fort, the island's principal terminus. Built during the British colonial era and situated in the heart of Maradana, Colombo 10, this mid-city junction station serves as a critical interchange point connecting the Main Line (Colombo Fort to Badulla), the Northern Line (towards Anuradhapura and Jaffna), and the Kelani Valley Line (towards Avissawella).

Maradana is the only station in Colombo where three major railway lines converge on shared infrastructure. Every express and intercity train departing from Colombo Fort — including the celebrated Podi Menike, Udarata Menike, and Ella Odyssey Tourist Express — passes through Maradana within minutes. Commuters boarding here skip the congestion of Fort, while still accessing direct trains to Kandy, Ella, Nanu Oya, Badulla, Galle, and Jaffna.

The station serves the densely populated urban corridor of Colombo 10 (Maradana) and Colombo 9 (Dematagoda). Its catchment area includes the sprawling Maradana wholesale bazaar, several major government hospitals — including Colombo National Hospital (CNH) just 600 metres away — and the Pettah commercial district, making it a daily lifeline for tens of thousands of workers, shoppers, and medical visitors.

For travellers connecting from the Kelani Valley Line, Maradana serves as the departure junction for suburban trains towards Homagama, Padukka, and Avissawella. KV Line trains operate on a dedicated narrow-gauge section, branching from the main Colombo rail corridor at Maradana Junction. These slow but charming suburban railcars pass through picturesque Colombo suburban neighbourhoods — Cotta Road, Kirulapone, Nugegoda, and Homagama — before ascending into the rubber estate and river valley landscape of the Kelani basin.

Maradana's physical station building retains its original British colonial brick and tile architecture, with a covered main entrance canopy fronting D.R. Wijewardena Mawatha. The station master's office oversees operations across both the main platforms and the Kelani Valley bay platform tucked to the southern side. Despite its heritage appearance, the station handles a substantial daily passenger volume exceeding 45,000 commuter and intercity movements, placing it among Colombo's top three busiest rail points alongside Fort and Maligawatte.
